Almost Here! (November 2013)

Almost Here is a feature where each month I talk about upcoming things in the YA world that I’m excited about. This includes new book releases, movies of YA books, book signing events, etc. Keep in mind that this is definitely not everything. It’s only the stuff that I know about and/or am most interested in.

Book Releases

This Wicked Game by Michelle Zink Brooke by Veronica Rossi Night of Cake and Puppets by Laini Taylor Twinmaker by Sean Williams

Surprisingly, there’s not a whole lot coming out in November (at least, that interests me). I mean, two of these are novellas, too! Maybe this is a good thing. Maybe this will give me some time to catch up on all the books that came out earlier this fall! Hah!

Movies

I have to admit, I have mixed feelings about seeing the Ender’s Game movie. When I was in school, Ender’s Game was my absolute favorite book that was assigned reading. I loved the story, and ever since I realized it was a series, I’d been meaning to read the rest of the books. But then Orson Scott Card engaged in a lot of behavior that really turned me off (and this was before, and in addition to, all of his homophobic commentary this year). Now I’m torn between wanting to see a movie for a book I loved, and not wanting to support a person that I really kind of detest. Sigh!

However: Catching Fire? Hell yes, I will be seeing that movie! This book was my favorite from the trilogy, and I am eagerly anticipating the film! My sister better hurry up and read the book before this movie comes out or I’m going to see it without her!

ALSO: I can’t believe I missed The Book Thief — thank you to Amy for pointing it out! I thought this movie wasn’t coming out until spring 2014, so I’m really glad someone alerted me. I freaking loved this book, so I’m hopeful that the movie is also brilliant. We shall see.

Book Events

It should come as no surprise that my sister and I have a couple of awesome book events lined up for November!

Altered by Gennifer Albin Siege and Storm by Leigh Bardugo Unremembered by Jessica Brody Horde by Ann Aguirre

First up is the Fierce Reads Tour, with four awesome authors (three of which I have already read their books!): Gennifer Albin, Leigh Bardugo, Jessica Brody, and Ann Aguirre! In fact, I DO have Enclave on my Kindle, so maybe I’ll try to read it before the event!

Then, the very next day is Houston Book Rave! They’ll have over 20 YA authors, over 20 NA authors (some of whom are YA/NA authors both), and almost 20 adult authors. Whoa! It appears that many of them are local, which is interesting.

I might also go with friend and fellow book club member to see Colum McCann later in the month, but I’m still a bit iffy on that one. This is the first event I’ve considered attending where you actually have to buy a ticket to get in, and it’s for an author whose book I didn’t really like all that much. The only reason I’m thinking about it is just to hear what he has to say, to see if it’ll enlighten me a bit about TransAtlantic. We’ll see.

What are you looking forward to in November?
